New Joomla 3.2 release adds encryption feature, streamlines interface and a lot more!

iClickAndHost Joomla 3.2 logo The popular open source content management system Joomla announced on Wednesday the release of Joomla 3.2.

For this new version Joomla has revamped the extension development and installation process, updated the administration interface, and added tons of new features. Joomla 3.2 includes a number of bug fixes and improvements drawn from the feedback of over 620,000 Joomla forum members.

Improvements include options for two-factor authentication, a tool for password encryption, to protect user accounts stored in Joomla website databases called “Bcrypt,” and a Rapid Application Development or “RAD” tool for developing Joomla extensions. Version 3.2 also brings improvements to the template manager and WYSIWYG editor, an AJAX interface, a micro-data semantics library, and HTML form fields and attributes. One neat feature in Joomla 3.2 “Version Control” allows content items to be rolled back or compared side-by-side with updates

“Joomla is growing at a furious pace, with more than 45 million downloads to date—and a broader audience means it’s more important than ever that the latest version be as simple, stable and straightforward as possible,” said Paul Orwig, president of Open Source Matters. “So with 3.2 we worked hard to make sure you don’t have to be an expert to quickly tap the sheer power of Joomla.”

The update is meant to improve Joomla’s simplicity and security, but the addition of a multi-lingual site installer in this version 3.2 could expand the growth potential and may very well increase Joomla’s popularity more than any improvements to the software itself.

Joomla is used by over 3 percent of all websites to manage content, from small businesses to major multi-nationals. The open source CSM came under cross fire earlier this year when a “trivial exploit” allowed hackers to hijack Joomla sites and in some cases turn them into botnets. The rival CMS WordPress experienced similar problems, and the two, along with Drupal, continue to be locked in a struggle for share of the CMS market.
